The Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder project, a pioneering initiative by SSE Thermal and Equinor in the United Kingdom, has recently received approval. The project aims to consolidate hydrogen production, storage, and power generation at the Aldbrough Gas Storage site using innovative technologies. It will involve the operation of a 35MWe electrolyser that is powered by low-carbon electricity to produce hydrogen. The produced hydrogen will then be stored in a salt cavern and utilized to generate green power through a turbine, providing electricity back to the grid when needed most. A significant aspect of this project is that the plant is designed to run on up to 100% hydrogen, marking a substantial development in the utilization of clean energy sources. The project is well-positioned to exceed the UK government's 2030 clean power target, with advanced planning and engineering work already completed. Sally O'Brien, the Senior Project Manager, highlighted the importance of securing planning consent as a step towards the UK's low-carbon future. The integration of hydrogen production, storage, and power generation in the Humber region is expected to create new investment opportunities and contribute to national clean power and decarbonisation objectives. Looking ahead, SSE and Equinor have plans to expand hydrogen storage capacity at Aldbrough and establish a dedicated Humber Hydrogen Pipeline to connect key energy sites in the region, fostering investment and supporting decarbonisation efforts.
