US electric utility CPS Energy has joined forces with cleantech startup Modern Hydrogen to produce clean hydrogen from natural gas in a bid to enhance grid reliability and cut emissions. The collaboration will test Modern Hydrogen's technology, which differs from conventional practices of burning natural gas and managing CO2. Instead, the process disintegrates hydrocarbons in the gas to yield hydrogen and solid carbon. The captured solid carbon can then be repurposed in items like asphalt used in construction projects. CPS Energy views this endeavor as an initial step in their extensive strategic plan to generate dependable, eco-friendly power on a large scale, as laid out in their Energy Vision 2027. Modern Hydrogen's CEO, Tony Pan, expressed optimism in the partnership, emphasizing the potential of US natural gas for both clean energy production and superior materials for infrastructure. The pilot program aims for scalability while ensuring that CPS Energy consumers continue to receive reliable and cost-effective energy.
