ULEMCo has unveiled a groundbreaking solution, HyTANKa®, designed to facilitate hydrogen refuelling in the construction sector. The construction industry, known for its high energy demands and challenging decarbonisation process, faces a significant hurdle due to the lack of on-site hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. HyTANKa® functions as a mobile hydrogen supply and refuelling unit, providing a safe and versatile option for delivering fuel directly to construction machinery in off-road environments. This innovation eliminates the need for equipment to travel to filling stations, a critical barrier to the adoption of hydrogen-powered machinery on busy construction sites.
HyTANKa® operates autonomously with a two-way booster system, allowing it to refuel hydrogen-powered machines at pressures up to 350 bar and fill its tanks from lower pressure sources. The vehicle's road legality under ADR regulations enables it to travel to hydrogen production facilities for filling and move around construction sites fluidly. By utilizing a hydrogen dual-fuel engine, HyTANKa® reduces the overall carbon footprint of fuel logistics, aligning with sustainability objectives of modern construction projects.
The successful demonstration of HyTANKa® in live construction settings has validated its ability to facilitate uninterrupted machine operation through quick fuel loads. With a capacity to refuel multiple machines daily and operate in dispersed locations, HyTANKa® rivals the service model of conventional diesel bowsers. Amanda Lyne, ULEMCo's Managing Director, emphasizes the vehicle's role in bridging the gap between hydrogen production and on-site use, positioning it as a pivotal advancement in decarbonising challenging industrial sectors.
The commercial launch of HyTANKa® at the HEA 2025 Annual Conference signifies a significant milestone in hydrogen deployment for off-grid industries. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the vehicle's features and discuss its implications with ULEMCo representatives, highlighting its potential as a game-changer in promoting cleaner energy practices.
