UK Consortium Trials Hydrogen and Battery Electric HGVs: ZENFreight & John G Russell Join Forces
Key Ideas
- John G Russell (Transport) Ltd joins ZENFreight consortium to trial hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric HGVs as part of the UK Government’s ZEHID Programme.
- The consortium aims to accelerate adoption of zero emission HGVs by comparing BEVs with HFCEVs in real-world operations and sharing depot charging infrastructure.
- The project will run for five years with vehicles operating on the roads by March 2026, collecting valuable data to strengthen the business case for zero-emission vehicle deployment.
- Russell Group expresses commitment to sustainability and innovation, aiming to achieve net zero by 2040 and play a significant role in driving the transition to cleaner logistics.
John G Russell (Transport) Ltd has joined the ZENFreight consortium to participate in the trial of hydrogen fuel cell (HFCEV) and battery electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in the UK. This initiative is part of the UK Government’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) Programme, led by Dynamon. John G Russell Transport will test three MAN battery electric HGVs and three hydrogen-electric Scania HFCEVs in a 6 by 2 configuration, aiming to introduce zero-emission vehicles to their fleet of 250 vehicles by 2040. The consortium will enable direct comparison of BEVs and HFCEVs in real-world operations and share depot charging infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of these technologies. By 2026, all vehicles in the project are expected to hit the road, operating for five years to gather essential data for scaling up zero-emission vehicle deployment. Russell Group's commitment to sustainability and innovation aligns with their participation in this project, demonstrating their dedication to reducing environmental impact. The ZEHID demonstration project marks a significant step towards a cleaner, greener future for logistics, with Russell Group playing a pivotal role in driving the transition towards sustainable transportation.
