UK's Whitelee Wind Farm to Lead in Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • Scottish Power plans to build a large green hydrogen production facility next to the Whitelee wind farm, aiming to use renewable energy sources for electrolysis.
  • The project received funding from the UK government and involves the storage, transportation, and export of hydrogen using high-pressure trailers and heavy goods vehicles.
  • Safety measures such as CCTV, fencing, and potential blast walls will be put in place, with the facility expected to create job opportunities and operate more than 1km away from public areas.
  • The application for hazardous substances consent was approved in January, marking a significant step towards the project's goal of being operational by the end of 2023.
Scottish Power is advancing towards establishing one of the UK's first large-scale green hydrogen production facilities adjacent to the Whitelee wind farm near Eaglesham. The plan involves utilizing renewable energy from the wind and solar farms to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis. This green hydrogen will then be stored, transported, and exported using high-pressure trailers, with up to six heavy goods vehicle movements per day anticipated for hydrogen transportation. The project, initially awarded £9.4m by the UK government in 2021, intends to have approximately 10 permanent staff on-site in addition to occasional workers from the co-located solar and wind farms. Safety protocols like venting systems, CCTV, and fencing will be implemented, along with measures such as blast walls to ensure security. The location of the facility, more than 1km away from public areas, highlights a commitment to safety and environmental considerations. Following the approval of the application for hazardous substances consent in January, the project is progressing towards becoming operational by the end of 2023. Scottish Ministers have acknowledged the significance of the project in the context of hydrogen production and the country's net zero goals, further underscoring the positive trajectory of the initiative.
