Yanmar PT's GH320FC Hydrogen Fuel Cell System for Maritime Applications Receives Approval in Principle from DNV
Key Ideas
  • Yanmar PT's GH320FC hydrogen fuel cell system has received approval in principle from DNV, offering a cleaner power source for various vessel types.
  • The system is designed for harbor and coastal vessels near hydrogen supplies, with flexibility in power output to meet different ship requirements.
  • The GH320FC has a rated output of 320 kW but can be adjusted to 240 kW, 160 kW, or 80 kW based on the number of fuel cell modules installed.
  • DNV Maritime recognizes fuel cells as a highly efficient and scalable power solution for achieving full zero-emission operations in maritime industries.
Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd. (Yanmar PT) has achieved approval in principle from the classification society DNV for its GH320FC maritime hydrogen fuel cell system. The GH320FC is designed to serve as a cleaner power source that can be integrated into various vessel types. Suitable for harbor and coastal vessels operating in proximity to hydrogen supplies, this system targets sectors like passenger ferries, inland waterway cargo ships, and port service vessels. It allows for parallel connections of multiple units and offers flexibility in the number of hydrogen fuel cell modules to cater to diverse power needs across different types of ships. With a primary rated output of 320 kW, the system can be adjusted to 240 kW, 160 kW, or 80 kW by varying the number of fuel cell modules. The GH320FC's dimensions are 11'6" in width, 3'11" in depth, and 5'7" in height, excluding piping connection parts. Yanmar PT's Masaru Hirose expressed confidence in their decarbonization solutions based on their successful installations, like the hydrogen fuel cell system on a coastal passenger ferry in Japan. DNV Maritime's Olaf Drews emphasized the importance of exploring options like fuel cells combined with renewable fuels to achieve full zero-emission operations in the maritime sector.
