IIT Kanpur and NSI Kanpur Collaborate for Advancing Biofuel Technologies
Key Ideas
- IIT Kanpur and NSI Kanpur have signed an MoU to establish a Centre of Excellence for Biofuels, focusing on ethanol, methanol, bio-CNG, aviation fuel, and green hydrogen production from biomass.
- The collaboration aims to enhance biofuel production efficiency and sustainability, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change.
- The partnership leverages NSI Kanpur's market expertise with IIT Kanpur's scientific knowledge to position India as a leader in biofuel technologies, in alignment with India's energy goals.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and National Sugar Institute, Kanpur (NSI Kanpur) have joined forces to establish a Centre of Excellence for Biofuels, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 15, 2024. This collaboration aims to advance research and technology in biofuels, specifically focusing on ethanol, methanol, bio-CNG, aviation fuel, and green hydrogen production from biomass. The partnership will engage in joint projects to enhance biofuel production efficiency and sustainability, addressing India's energy needs and promoting environmental conservation. The collaboration is significant in the context of the National Bio-fuel policy, 2018, which promotes ethanol production from sugarcane-based feedstock and aims for 20% blending of ethanol with petrol by 2025. NSI Kanpur's expertise in the biofuel industry combined with IIT Kanpur's scientific knowledge will establish a state-of-the-art center for biofuel research, positioning India as a leader in the field. The long-term MoU includes plans for a dedicated building with a laboratory and pilot plants funded by the ministry, with future industrial tie-ups. Ultimately, the collaboration intends to contribute to energy security, climate protection, and reducing fossil fuel dependence.
