Indian refineries are gearing up to invest ₹2 trillion ($23bn) in green hydrogen projects over the upcoming years as part of a major decarbonisation initiative. The plans include issuing tenders for 42,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen production among domestic oil refineries, with additional tenders awaiting the results of the initial phase. Several green hydrogen pilot plants are already operational or under construction by key players in the industry like Indian Oil Corp and GAIL India. India's largest green hydrogen facility, a 10,000 tonne per year plant by IOC, is set to start operations in 2027. The country's oil refineries, major hydrogen consumers, are expected to shift from grey to green hydrogen for various processes. Alongside green hydrogen, the country is also focusing on green ammonia production for strategic exports, with projects like the $470m Hygenco plant and the Ocior Energy initiative in Odisha. Additionally, India's National Green Hydrogen Mission aims for transport decarbonisation, planning hydrogen-powered trucks and buses pilot projects by 2027. The mission already has backing from key companies like Tata Motors and Reliance Industries, with plans for hydrogen refuelling stations across national freight corridors. Overall, India's hydrogen infrastructure push includes a substantial investment across refinery, ammonia, and mobility sectors, demonstrating a positive step towards sustainable energy development and emissions reduction.
