OMV Launches 10MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Schwechat Refinery
Key Ideas
  • OMV inaugurates a 10MW green hydrogen plant at Schwechat refinery, the largest of its kind in Austria.
  • The €25m plant can produce up to 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, supporting renewable fuel production and decarbonization.
  • The facility, powered by wind, hydro, and solar energy, is certified for producing renewable fuels of non-biological origin.
  • Austria aims to achieve 1GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030, emphasizing the transition to green hydrogen in energy-intensive industries.
OMV, the state-owned Austrian energy and chemicals company, has launched a 10MW green hydrogen production plant at the Schwechat refinery near Vienna. This facility, costing €25 million, has the capacity to produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, equivalent to around 4 tonnes per day. The plant utilizes a 10MW PEM electrolyser powered by renewable sources such as wind, hydro, and solar energy. OMV, with a target of achieving Net Zero by 2050 'at the latest', also announced that the plant is certified for producing renewable fuels of non-biological origin. The green hydrogen generated will be utilized for the production of sustainable aviation fuels and renewable diesel, contributing to decarbonizing processes at the Schwechat site. Martijn van Koten, OMV Board Member Fuels & Feedstock and Chemicals, highlighted the significance of establishing local green hydrogen production and supply chains in Europe to advance climate objectives while ensuring industrial development. Austria has set ambitious goals to install 1GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030 and replace 80% of fossil-based hydrogen in energy-intensive industries within the same timeframe. This initiative by OMV aligns with Austria's commitment to transitioning towards green hydrogen and reducing carbon emissions in industrial sectors.
