HPCL to Invest in Biogas Plants to Boost Clean Energy in India
Key Ideas
  • HPCL plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore to set up 24 compressed biogas plants in India over the next few years, helping in decarbonisation and rural employment.
  • India is aiming to increase the blending of compressed biogas in gas supplies, with a target to reach 5% blending by FY29, contributing to reducing carbon footprint.
  • The country's goal is to have 480 operational CBG plants by FY29, with significant investment from public sector oil and gas companies to achieve energy independence and meet climate goals.
  • The move towards biogas is part of a larger strategy to reduce India's dependence on expensive LNG imports, increase the share of natural gas in the energy mix, and promote clean energy access.
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) in India is set to invest around Rs 2,000 crore in establishing 24 compressed biogas (CBG) plants across the country to promote cleaner energy sources and work towards achieving a net-zero emissions target by 2070. The initiative, led by HPCL Renewable and Green Energy, aims to leverage agricultural residue, cattle dung, and sewage water as feedstock for the new CBG facilities. These plants, with a daily production capacity of 10 to 15 tonnes each, not only aid in decarbonisation but also support rural employment, energy independence, and organic fertiliser production. India, focusing on waste-to-energy projects to reduce its carbon footprint, has mandated blending compressed biogas into gas supplies, with a target of 5% blending by FY29. The country plans to have 480 operational CBG plants by FY29, with substantial investment from public sector oil and gas companies. This move aligns with India's goal to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix and decrease reliance on expensive LNG imports. The government sees CBG as a strategic enabler in achieving these targets while supporting climate goals and providing clean energy access to millions. HPCL's investment is part of a broader strategy by Indian oil marketing companies to diversify into renewables, biofuels, and green hydrogen for long-term sustainability.
