President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted South Africa's commitment to developing the green hydrogen industry during his keynote speech at the Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town. The government, in partnership with the EU, has prioritized projects such as Sasol's HyShift program, with investments exceeding R1.49 billion. The HyShift initiative targets the annual production of 400,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel, potentially driving up to 20 gigawatts of green hydrogen demand and offering a scalable decarbonization model for industries. Notable projects like the Sasolburg pilot and the Coega Green Ammonia Project in the Eastern Cape demonstrate the country's progress in green hydrogen production. President Ramaphosa also mentioned plans for more flagship hydrogen projects awaiting Cabinet approval. Additionally, South Africa is fast-tracking the development of its electricity transmission infrastructure through an independent office to support the expanding green hydrogen sector.
