The state of Kerala in India has emerged as a global leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, despite competition from major industrial players like China, Germany, and the United States. In April 2022, Kerala achieved a significant milestone by registering its Toyota Mirai hydrogen vehicle for research and development purposes, highlighting the state's commitment to environmental energy initiatives. The exclusive byproduct of the vehicle's operation is water, positioning it as a clean alternative to traditional internal combustion engines. Kerala's tax exemptions and infrastructure support for hydrogen-powered vehicles are driving the adoption of green capabilities and laying the groundwork for hydrogen-fueled transportation networks. The recent introduction of Kerala's first hydrogen-based bus system at Cochin airport, developed in collaboration with EKA Mobility, KPIT Technologies, and BPCL, further underscores the state's dedication to sustainable mobility solutions. This project not only serves as a proof of concept for hydrogen fuel cell technology in public transportation but also sets the stage for future expansion across India. Kerala's green hydrogen policy aims to achieve carbon neutrality and build climate resilience by leveraging hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, which produce water vapor as their only emission.
