Australia's government has announced its support for the development of a green hydrogen project in the country amidst setbacks in the hydrogen sector. The government, through the Hydrogen Headstart Program of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), will provide grant funding of $283 million to Orica's Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub project. This initiative aims to produce renewable hydrogen using a 50-megawatt electrolyzer powered by renewable electricity. The hydrogen produced will replace natural gas in Orica's ammonia production process, thereby reducing carbon emissions. The Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub project is crucial for decarbonizing Orica's Kooragang Island Ammonia Manufacturing Facility and producing low-carbon ammonia and ammonium nitrate for domestic use across mining, agriculture, and industrial sectors.
