European Commission Awards Grants for Energy Infrastructure Projects
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission, through CINEA, awarded EUR 1.25 billion to 41 energy infrastructure projects under the CEF for Energy program, focusing on study phases.
  • The Italian portion of the H2 Backbone project, part of the SoutH2 Corridor hydrogen pipeline system, received EUR 24 million for engineering studies.
  • Other projects include offshore wind connection in South Brittany, an electricity exchange link between France and Spain, and modernization of a hydro pumped storage plant in Slovakia.
  • The projects aim to enhance Europe's competitiveness, integrate energy markets, and support the decarbonization of energy systems, aligning with the EU's net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
The European Climate, Environment and Infrastructure Executive Agency (CINEA) recently executed grant agreements for 5 out of 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects chosen for funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Energy. The European Commission, operating through CINEA, is set to distribute a total of EUR 1.25 billion to these projects to primarily support their study phases. The top recipient among the awarded projects is the Italian segment of the H2 Backbone project, part of the SoutH2 Corridor hydrogen pipeline system involving Austria, Italy, and Germany. This portion is designated to receive EUR 24 million for engineering and environmental studies. The broader SoutH2 Corridor project, which aims to transport renewable hydrogen from North Africa to Europe, includes 3,300 kilometers of pipelines, with the Italian section covering 2,300 kilometers. Additionally, a project in South Brittany for offshore wind connection, an electricity exchange link between France and Spain, and the modernization of a hydro pumped storage plant in Slovakia also secured funding. These initiatives were recognized for contributing to Europe's competitiveness, energy market integration, and the decarbonization of energy systems, in line with the EU's target of achieving a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
