OMV, a leading energy company, inaugurated its ReOil® and electrolyzer facilities at the Schwechat refinery near Vienna. The ReOil plant converts hard-to-recycle plastics into high-quality products, promoting circularity and reducing environmental impact. The 10 MW electrolyzer facility is Austria's largest operational green hydrogen plant, producing 1,500 tons of green hydrogen annually. This event marked a significant step in OMV's Strategy 2030, aiming to become a sustainable chemicals, fuels, and energy company while committing to net-zero emissions by 2050.
OMV also announced plans for a 140 MW green hydrogen project in Lower Austria, set to produce 23,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. This initiative aligns with OMV's strategy to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 150,000 tons annually, equivalent to the carbon footprint of 20,000 people. By leveraging renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro power, OMV is reshaping industrial processes towards sustainability and future-proofing its industry.
The company's focus on innovation and sustainability was highlighted by Martijn van Koten, OMV Executive Vice President, emphasizing the transformative impact of green hydrogen in driving industrial evolution. The future facility in Lower Austria aims to meet a significant portion of the hydrogen demand at the Schwechat refinery, positioning OMV as a pioneer in industrial transformation. With a planned start-up in 2027, the project will benefit from OMV's experience with the 10 MW electrolyzer facility, certified as Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin under EU legislation.
