Sarawak Leading the Way in Hydrogen Infrastructure Development
Key Ideas
  • PETROS Multifuel Station (MFS) in Batu Kawa, Sarawak, is soon to be operational, becoming the 11th multifuel station in the region and the second with hydrogen capabilities.
  • The station, linked with MFS Darul Hana, will pioneer a unique hydrogen distribution model using Mobile Hydrogen Refuelling System, a first in the region.
  • Sarawak Economic Development Corporation Energy (SEDCE) is driving major hydrogen projects, including the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub, positioning Sarawak at the forefront of clean hydrogen initiatives.
  • The development of more flagship MFS and EV charging facilities in Sarawak aims to establish a comprehensive hydrogen refuelling network across main cities, supporting decarbonisation goals for Malaysia by 2050.
The PETROS Multifuel Station (MFS) in Batu Kawa, Sarawak, is nearing operational readiness, becoming the 11th multifuel station in the region and the second flagship station capable of dispensing hydrogen. Sarawak Economic Development Corporation Energy (SEDCE) announced that Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian visited the site to inspect the progress. The MFS in Batu Kawa is interconnected with MFS Darul Hana, where a hydrogen plant with 150-kg production capacity is located to supply hydrogen. This innovative setup will utilize tube trailers and a Mobile Hydrogen Refuelling System for dispensing, a pioneering model in the region. The SEDCE highlighted that four more flagship MFS are in the development phase, with plans to extend the network to cities like Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri, further expanding the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. Additionally, SEDCE is spearheading essential hydrogen projects, including the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub in collaboration with Japanese and South Korean consortia, showcasing Sarawak's leadership in clean hydrogen initiatives. The aim is to contribute to Malaysia's decarbonisation objectives, aligning with NET ZERO 2050 goals. The comprehensive development of MFS and EV charging facilities across Sarawak is crucial for establishing a robust integrated hydrogen refuelling network, supporting a sustainable energy future for the region.
