Setting Sail with Green Hydrogen: Klaipėda Port Pioneers Baltic Region's First Hydrogen Station
Key Ideas
  • A construction permit has been granted for the first hydrogen production and refueling station in the Baltic States at the Port of Klaipėda, Lithuania.
  • The project, with a total estimated cost of €12 million, is slated to produce 127 tons of green hydrogen annually, with around half of the funding coming from European Union funds.
  • Klaipėda Port's ambitious goal is to lead the region in green hydrogen production, with plans to operate a green hydrogen-powered vessel alongside the station.
  • The project aligns with Lithuania's and the European Union's sustainability commitments, marking a significant step towards environmentally friendly maritime operations.
In a groundbreaking development, the Port of Klaipėda in Lithuania is set to embark on constructing the Baltic States' first hydrogen production and refueling station. The station, which aims to supply green hydrogen for vessels, port equipment, and private transportation, received a construction permit after a tender process by the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. This initiative, with an estimated cost of €12 million, will see the installation of a hydrogen plant capable of producing 127 tons of hydrogen annually. Notably, the project is being partially financed by European Union funds. The hydrogen station, set to be housed in a standard 40-foot container, is a joint effort between EPC contractor MT Group and UK-based engineering company IMI. Director General Algis Latakas expressed Klaipėda Port's commitment to sustainability, aiming to lead the region in green hydrogen production. The port is also constructing a green hydrogen-powered vessel, further showcasing its dedication to environmentally friendly practices. Furthermore, this endeavor is in line with Lithuania's and the EU's environmental obligations, signifying a significant stride towards greener maritime operations. The project's progress reflects a bold step towards harnessing green energy in the maritime industry, setting a positive precedent for sustainable infrastructure development in the region.
