The Spanish government has announced the allocation of €1.22 billion ($1.42 billion) in funding to seven green hydrogen clusters as part of the 'Hydrogen Valleys' programme. These projects, situated in different regions including Aragon, Andalusia, Castile and León, Catalonia, and Galicia, are set to have a combined electrolysis capacity of 2.29 gigawatts (GW) and feature 12 proposed green hydrogen production facilities expecting to yield an annual total of 270,000 tonnes. The grants are also anticipated to mobilize a sum of €5.82 billion in investments. Aragon tops the list with €322 million in funding, followed by Andalusia, Castile and León, Galicia, and Catalonia. To be eligible for funding, the clusters had to meet certain criteria such as having a minimum of 100 megawatts of electrolyser capacity. The move aims to promote green hydrogen clusters that cover various stages of the hydrogen value chain, capitalizing on economies of scale and enhancing consumer diversity in specific regions. This funding initiative signifies a significant boost for the renewable energy sector in Spain, facilitating the growth of green hydrogen production and distribution systems across the country.
