  • Hydrogen-fueled CHP System combines fuel cells, solar collectors, heat pumps, and chillers, achieving energy stability and efficiency.
  • System demonstrates a 36.5% reduction in operating costs and a 58.1% cut in CO₂ emissions compared to existing greenhouse systems.
  • KIMM's innovative technology allows stable energy production regardless of external weather conditions, making a significant contribution to achieving energy self-sufficiency in greenhouse agriculture.
The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) has successfully developed and tested a Hydrogen-fueled Combined Heat and Power (CHP) System, revolutionizing greenhouse agriculture by enabling energy independence and carbon reduction. The system integrates hydrogen fuel cells, solar thermal collectors, heat pumps, and adsorption chillers in a 660-square-meter smart greenhouse. It uses multiple renewable energy sources to generate electricity and reuse waste heat for cooling and heating, overcoming the limitations of single-source systems. By combining fuel cells, heat pumps, and solar collectors, the system optimizes energy flows, minimizes interdependence, and maximizes energy stability. It has shown impressive results, with a 36.5% reduction in operating costs and a 58.1% decrease in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional systems. The system's adaptability to varying weather conditions and high energy efficiency make it ideal for Korea's environment. Dr. Sang Min Lee emphasized the stability of energy production and the system's contribution to achieving energy self-sufficiency in greenhouse agriculture, marking the first application of hydrogen fuel cells in smart farming. Dr. Jin Young Park highlighted the high energy efficiency and stability of the system, improving economic viability by using the electricity generated directly in the greenhouse. This innovation not only benefits agriculture but also aligns with Korea's national green hydrogen and smart farm innovation programs, showcasing KIMM's commitment to sustainability and technological advancement in agriculture.
