Vietnam-France Partnership Paving the Way for Green Maritime Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Vietnam-France collaboration in deploying hydrogen fuel cell technology for maritime industry to reduce carbon footprint and achieve 'Net Zero' emissions by 2050.
  • Partnership includes feasibility studies, technical assessments, and pilot projects on hydrogen-fueled ship operations with the support of VIMC.
  • HDF Energy to provide conversion solutions like onboard fuel cells and onshore refueling stations powered by green hydrogen from Renewstable® plants in Vietnam.
  • VIMC's commitment to green transformation with investments in new ships, advanced technologies, and digital operations, aligning with the Corporation's emissions reduction roadmap.
During Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to France for the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, Vietnam and France signed an agreement at the Vietnam-France Business Forum in Paris. The collaboration between HDF Energy and VIMC aims to introduce hydrogen fuel cell technology to Vietnam's maritime industry to tackle the sector's significant greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative aligns with Vietnam's commitment to COP26 and IMO's goal of achieving 'Net Zero' emissions by 2050. The partnership will involve upgrading ships and port infrastructure by conducting feasibility studies, technical assessments, and pilot projects on hydrogen-fueled ship operations. Green hydrogen from HDF's Renewstable® plants in Vietnam will power the fuel cells, aiding in the reduction of carbon emissions. VIMC, the Vietnamese maritime corporation, will support these activities by providing operational data, selecting vessels and ports for research, and implementing pilot projects. They will also evaluate the performance of fuel cell technology on their fleet and infrastructure. HDF Energy will design and integrate conversion solutions for the maritime sector, including onboard fuel cells and onshore refueling stations. VIMC's General Director highlighted the corporation's commitment to green transformation, investing in new ships, advanced technologies, and digital operations to reduce CO₂ emissions. The collaboration is seen as a catalyst for VIMC's emissions reduction roadmap and aligns with the corporation's goal of achieving 'Net Zero' emissions by 2050. Damien Havard, Chairman of HDF Energy, emphasized the unique opportunity the Vietnam maritime sector offers for hydrogen innovation to decarbonize heavy transport. The partnership aims to build a zero-emission shipping model that can be replicated beyond Vietnam. Technical cooperation between HDF Energy and VIMC will be supported by scaling up successful models nationwide and seeking international funding for accelerated implementation. Together, they envision making hydrogen a core component of Vietnam's green maritime strategy, contributing to the global goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
