ZeroAvia, a hydrogen-electric engine start-up, has unveiled plans to construct a significant manufacturing facility for its hydrogen-electric powertrains near Glasgow Airport in Renfrewshire, Scotland. The company's announcement comes after securing approximately 3,000 engine and component pre-orders, totaling $10 billion in future orders. This new facility aims to cater to the increasing demand for zero-emission aircraft powertrains and is expected to generate 'hundreds' of high-skilled job opportunities in the region. The project in Scotland has been made feasible through a £9 million grant from Scottish Enterprise, in addition to substantial investments. ZeroAvia recently received a £20 million equity investment from the Scottish National Investment Bank as part of its Series C funding, with additional support from the UK National Wealth Fund and other key investors. Furthermore, the UK Government has awarded ZeroAvia significant funding, totaling £18.5 million since 2019, to develop its fuel cell and powertrain technology. This support, combined with over $250 million in private investments, has propelled the company's progress in the field. Noteworthy accomplishments include flying the world's first hydrogen-electric commercial scale aircraft in 2020 and increasing power output to fly the world's largest hydrogen-electric aircraft in 2023. Val Miftakhov, the Founder & Chief Executive of ZeroAvia, highlighted Scotland's advantageous position with its strong aerospace and engineering expertise, growing hydrogen sector, and clear aviation strategy. Miftakhov emphasized the significant transformation the aviation industry is undergoing, with new propulsion systems paving the way for cleaner and more efficient flights. The company views Scotland as playing a crucial role in driving this transformation and expressed gratitude for the support received from Scottish Enterprise, equity investors, and the UK Government as they move towards manufacturing readiness and certification of their engines.
