Saxony-Anhalt Boosts Green Hydrogen with €87m in Subsidies
Key Ideas
- Saxony-Anhalt allocates €87 million in new green hydrogen subsidies to support the installation of electrolysers and hydrogen storage facilities in the central German mining area.
- The funding aims to enhance the economic viability of hydrogen projects in key energy-intensive industries and make the region future-proof as an industrial location.
- Companies in Saxony-Anhalt have until 7 August to apply for funding under the two separate calls targeting electrolyser installations and green hydrogen facilities.
- The increase in subsidy amounts per megawatt of capacity is expected to boost the transition towards green hydrogen production and utilization in the region.
The German state of Saxony-Anhalt has announced €87 million in new green hydrogen subsidies to bolster the adoption and infrastructure of green hydrogen in the central German mining area. The funding, sourced from the European Just Transition Fund (JTF), is divided into two separate calls. The first call, 'Green Hydrogen: Electrolysers,' allocates €58 million to support the installation of electrolysers and hydrogen storage at power plants and former coal mines. This initiative will benefit companies aiming to utilize green hydrogen in energy-intensive sectors like the chemical industry. The second call, 'Saxony-Anhalt Future Energies/Green Hydrogen,' provides €29 million for facilities producing, storing, and distributing green hydrogen, including the construction of new hydrogen pipelines and repurposing existing natural gas pipelines. The energy minister highlighted the importance of supporting projects to ensure the region's industrial sustainability. In contrast, the reduction in hydrogen funding at the federal level sparked concerns among industry experts. The move by the German government to cut hydrogen funding was criticized for potentially hampering industry growth and competitiveness. Despite this, Saxony-Anhalt's proactive approach to incentivize green hydrogen projects signifies a positive step towards achieving energy transition goals in the region.
