DHL Freight Pioneers Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks for Low-Emission Logistics
Key Ideas
  • DHL Freight collaborates with BMW Group, IVECO, and TEAL Mobility to launch two hydrogen fuel cell trucks as part of the EU's H2Haul project.
  • The project aims to assess the viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty logistics and accelerate its commercial adoption in Europe.
  • Both trucks have a range of 700+ kilometers and can refuel in just 25 minutes, showcasing the efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells.
  • DHL Freight's commitment to decarbonize its road transport aligns with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 across the DHL Group.
DHL Freight, in collaboration with partners like the BMW Group, IVECO, and TEAL Mobility, has introduced two hydrogen fuel cell trucks into daily operation as part of the European H2Haul project. This initiative, supported by the EU's Clean Hydrogen Partnership, seeks to assess the practicality of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty logistics and expedite its commercial implementation in Europe. The trucks, boasting a remarkable range of over 700 kilometers and quick refueling in about 25 minutes, demonstrate the potential efficiency of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel source. While currently using traditional hydrogen, DHL Freight plans to transition to green hydrogen during the project, emphasizing environmental sustainability. Concurrently, the company is involved in the HyCET project to compare hydrogen fuel cell technology with combustion engines under real-world logistic scenarios. As part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions, DHL Freight is also engaging in the HyCET research project, where they will trial four hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. These initiatives mark significant strides in DHL Freight's efforts to decarbonize its road transport operations and contribute to the broader objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 set by the DHL Group.
