In a remarkable shift, Poland has transformed from refurbishing diesel locomotives to becoming a leading hub for hydrogen rail transport in Europe. PESA, based in Bydgoszcz, unveiled the first hydrogen locomotive in the country, which has since received authorization for commercial operation. Powered by Ballard fuel-cell stacks and hydrogen tanks, this locomotive offers impressive performance metrics such as noise reduction and emission-free operation. Further collaborations with Scandinavian partners have led to plans for deploying hydrogen locomotives in Sweden by 2027–28, accompanied by the establishment of green-hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Poland's endeavors are supported by the Polish Hydrogen Strategy 2030, which aims for sustainable initiatives like commercial hydrogen trains and the development of numerous H₂ stations by 2025. With significant EU backing, including funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, Poland's hydrogen rail projects are poised to set new standards for zero-emission rail transport. Through successful deployments and partnerships, Poland is positioning itself as a key player in the global push for clean energy and sustainable transportation. The future looks promising for Poland's hydrogen rail sector, with potential for domestic firms to lead the way in establishing green progress on the tracks.
