India's Ambitious Plan: Green Hydrogen to Power Aviation and Shipping Sectors
Key Ideas
  • India aims to deploy 1,000 hydrogen trucks and buses by 2030 to reduce road transport emissions.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a budget of ₹19,744 crore, targets reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.
  • Initial investment for mobility pilot projects in FY26 is set at ₹496 crore to kickstart the transition to green hydrogen vehicles.
  • Hydrogen cars are viewed as a promising alternative to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles in India.
The Indian government is expanding its focus on hydrogen by aiming to introduce green hydrogen into the aviation and shipping sectors in addition to its plan to deploy at least 1,000 trucks and buses powered by green hydrogen by 2030. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with a significant budget of ₹19,744 crore for the period up to FY30, is part of efforts to reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuel imports. Specifically, in FY26, a budget of ₹496 crore has been allocated for mobility pilot projects to initiate the transition towards green hydrogen vehicles. Abhay Bakre, the Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, highlighted that while around 50 trucks and buses are expected to run on hydrogen this year, the goal is to significantly scale up operations in the following years. Hydrogen cars are seen as a promising solution for reducing emissions in road transport, following the trend of electric vehicles. The government's positive outlook on green hydrogen signifies a shift towards sustainability and renewable energy sources in the transportation sector.
