Colombia is actively seeking more than 50bn euros from European renewable energy investors to expedite the decarbonization of its grid and enhance its renewable energy capabilities. Energy Minister Edwin Palma is spearheading this effort as part of a broader strategy to attract 35GW of new solar and wind capacity, along with initiatives in green hydrogen. Palma, accompanied by a Colombian delegation, will engage with over 170 energy companies in Brussels to discuss the challenges in Colombia's energy transition and present investment opportunities. The government, under President Gustavo Petro's leadership, is striving to eliminate bottlenecks for non-conventional renewable energy projects by potentially removing permitting requirements for projects below 100MW. This move is expected to stimulate energy production and facilitate the implementation of renewable energy projects. With a current renewable energy capacity of 1.3GW, excluding hydroelectric plants, Colombia aims to reach 6GW by the end of Petro's term in 2026. However, 52% of renewable energy projects are facing delays attributed to administrative and regulatory hurdles. By streamlining processes and attracting foreign investments, Colombia anticipates significant growth in its renewable energy sector, contributing to its overall energy transition goals.
