Airbus Unveils Three Hydrogen-Powered Zero-Emission Aircraft Concepts for 2035
Key Ideas
  • Airbus reveals three concepts for zero-emission commercial aircraft by 2035, all powered by hydrogen.
  • The concepts explore various technology pathways and aerodynamic configurations to achieve zero-emission flight.
  • Airbus CEO, Guillaume Faury, believes in the potential of hydrogen to significantly reduce aviation's climate impact.
  • One of the concepts is a turbofan design with a range of 2,000+ nautical miles, powered by a modified gas-turbine engine running on hydrogen.
Airbus has unveiled three concepts for the world's first zero-emission commercial aircraft that could potentially enter service by 2035. These concepts represent different approaches to achieving zero-emission flight, exploring various technology pathways and aerodynamic configurations to support Airbus's ambition in leading the de-carbonisation of the aviation industry. All three concepts rely on hydrogen as a primary power source, which Airbus views as a promising clean aviation fuel crucial for meeting climate-neutral targets in aerospace and other industries. Guillaume Faury, the CEO of Airbus, described this revelation as a historic moment for the commercial aviation sector. The company aims to play a pioneering role in what is considered the most significant transition the industry has ever faced. Faury emphasized the potential of hydrogen, in both synthetic fuels and as a primary power source for commercial aircraft, to make a substantial reduction in aviation's climate impact. The three aircraft concepts, codenamed 'ZEROe,' are designed for climate-neutral zero-emission commercial flights. One of these concepts is a turbofan design intended for 120-200 passengers, with a range exceeding 2,000 nautical miles. This aircraft is capable of transcontinental operations and is powered by a modified gas-turbine engine that runs on hydrogen instead of traditional jet fuel. The liquid hydrogen required for operation will be stored and distributed through tanks located behind the rear pressure bulkhead.
