UK Accelerates Innovation in Hydrogen-Enabled Flight at Paris Air Show
Key Ideas
  • Industry Minister Sarah Jones announced significant investment at the Paris Air Show to boost advanced manufacturing and defense, focusing on hydrogen-enabled flight.
  • Projects at Cranfield University, like DRAGONFLY and MACH2INE, aim to develop specialized components and machines for testing materials in hydrogen-powered aircraft.
  • This investment is crucial for accelerating the decarbonization of aviation and advancing the UK's aerospace industry, with a focus on hydrogen technologies.
  • The Cranfield Hydrogen Integration Incubator (CH2i) is set to become a leading center for hydrogen R&D in aviation, with state-of-the-art facilities and collaborations with industry.
The UK's Industry Minister, Sarah Jones, unveiled a significant investment at the Paris Air Show to enhance growth in advanced manufacturing and defense, with a particular focus on hydrogen-enabled flight. Professor Dame Helen Atkinson praised the UK's aerospace innovation and highlighted the potential of hydrogen-enabled flight to reduce aviation carbon emissions. Cranfield University is actively involved in two projects, DRAGONFLY and MACH2INE, which aim to develop specialized components and machines for testing materials in hydrogen-powered aircraft. DRAGONFLY, in collaboration with Actuation Lab, focuses on creating a special valve to control super-cold liquid hydrogen flow for zero-emissions aircraft. MACH2INE, in partnership with Darvick Ltd, is working on machines to test materials under extreme conditions for hydrogen-powered aircraft. These projects are essential for advancing cleaner aviation and validating materials for hydrogen-powered aviation. Dr. Efstathios Siampis and Dr. Francesco Fanicchia, among others at Cranfield University, lead these projects and emphasize the importance of these initiatives in the journey towards decarbonizing aviation. The investment also supports the Cranfield Hydrogen Integration Incubator (CH2i), a specialized hub for hydrogen R&D in aviation. With cutting-edge facilities and collaborations with industry, CH2i is poised to become a key player in advancing hydrogen technologies for aviation.
