Since 2020, the EU has been actively supporting the scale-up of renewable hydrogen production through a comprehensive regulatory framework. The European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) has played a crucial role in enabling financing for hydrogen projects. The Commission is set to launch a third auction by the end of 2025 under the Innovation Fund, with a budget of up to EUR 1 billion, further emphasizing its commitment to supporting hydrogen initiatives. Additionally, the Innovation Fund has already allocated over EUR 3 billion to more than 40 projects covering the entire hydrogen value chain. To enhance the impact of funding calls, the IF has introduced the 'as-a-Service' feature, allowing Member States to allocate national resources alongside the Innovation Fund, promoting collaboration and joint efforts. The EU Commission is also working on establishing joint European auctions for imports of renewable hydrogen, aiming to attract competitive bids from third-country producers. Furthermore, the upcoming Mechanism to support market development of hydrogen will bring together key stakeholders using an online platform, fostering connections and providing financial support. Overall, the EU's initiatives demonstrate a positive and proactive approach towards boosting the renewable hydrogen sector.
