The Department for Transport in the United Kingdom has taken significant steps to boost the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to meet the country's SAF mandate. Starting from January 2025, the mandate requires the aviation sector to gradually increase the use of SAF in flights departing from the UK, reaching 22% by 2040 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air travel. SAF, made from sustainable sources like household waste, significantly lowers emissions compared to fossil jet fuel. The government has introduced a revenue certainty mechanism (RCM) to attract investments in SAF production, ensuring minimal ticket price changes through industry-funded levies. An additional £400,000 in funding aims to expedite the introduction of new clean fuels to the market. While challenges exist in scaling up production and sourcing feedstocks, industry collaboration and government initiatives focus on maintaining cost-efficiency and mandate compliance, supporting decarbonization efforts in the aviation industry.
