$75 Million Boost for Norwegian Emission-Free Shipping Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Enova awards $75 million to projects developing hydrogen- and ammonia-powered vessels for emission-free shipping.
  • Winning companies LH2 Shipping, Møre Sjø, and Amon Maritime receive funding for the construction of bulk carriers powered by hydrogen and ammonia.
  • Investments aim to support the growth of hybrid systems in the maritime industry and establish infrastructure for ammonia bunkering along the Norwegian coast.
  • Enova's Managing Director highlights the importance of scaling up emission-cutting solutions in ocean transportation by 2050.
The Norwegian government enterprise, Enova, has allocated approximately $75.5 million to support projects developing hydrogen- and ammonia-powered vessels for emission-free shipping. The funding includes $50.5 million for hydrogen-powered ships and $25 million for ammonia-powered ships. Companies such as LH2 Shipping, Møre Sjø, and Amon Maritime are set to benefit from these investments. LH2 Shipping plans to build bulk carriers powered by liquid hydrogen, while Møre Sjø has ordered hydrogen-powered bulk carriers. Amon Maritime will construct large bulk carriers powered by ammonia. The investments aim to enhance the use of hybrid systems in the maritime sector, combining fuel cells and batteries. Enova also plans to launch a support scheme for ammonia bunkering facilities along the Norwegian coast. The funding is part of efforts to reduce emissions from ocean transportation, with a focus on scalable solutions for the future. Enova's Managing Director emphasized the importance of industry experience-building to achieve emission reduction goals by 2050.
