Nikkiso Receives Order for Hydrogen-Fueled Ship Pump Unit from Kawasaki
Key Ideas
  • Nikkiso has secured an order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries for a pump unit for hydrogen-fueled ships, combining LNG-fueled ship technologies with hydrogen stations.
  • The pump unit will be used in a world-first hydrogen-fueled ship featuring a low-speed two-stroke hydrogen-dual fueled engine, approved by ClassNK for its engine type.
  • The project is supported by NEDO's GI Fund, focusing on developing marine hydrogen engines and MHFS to address the shipping sector's greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The collaborative project with Kawasaki and two other companies aims to develop and demonstrate marine hydrogen-fueled engines with various power ranges, with an operational ship planned for 2028.
Nikkiso Co., Ltd. has received an order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for a pump unit designated for hydrogen-fueled ships. This pump unit, to be delivered in 2026, will utilize a combination of technologies from products for LNG-fueled ships and hydrogen stations. The hydrogen-fueled ship, incorporating a low-speed two-stroke hydrogen-dual fueled engine, has achieved Approval in Principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), marking a significant milestone in the development of hydrogen propulsion in the maritime industry. The project, part of the 'Development of marine hydrogen engines and MHFS,' supported by NEDO's Green Innovation Fund, aims to contribute to carbon neutrality by 2050 by addressing greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping sector. Kawasaki and two other companies proposed the project to NEDO, leading to its adoption in October 2021. The collaborative effort involves the simultaneous development of marine hydrogen-fueled engines with different power ranges and applications, with Kawasaki focusing on the MHFS development. The hydrogen-fueled ship is set to commence demonstration operation in 2028, showcasing advancements in green technology and renewable energy within the marine engineering sector.
