Revolutionizing Japanese Maritime Industry with Hydrogen-Powered Engines
Key Ideas
- Strategic partnership formed in Tokyo to introduce hydrogen-powered marine engines in Japan, aiming to support the country's zero-emission shipping goals.
- Deployment of BeHydro's dual fuel and 100% hydrogen engines with adaptation to Japanese standards for use in ports and coastal areas.
- Upcoming installation of V12 dual fuel hydrogen engines on a tugboat and inline 6-cylinder 100% hydrogen engines on a zero-emission vessel, with support from Nippon Foundation Zero Emission Ships Project.
- JPNH₂YDRO will oversee import, testing, and delivery, while DAIHATSU INFINEARTH will provide validation and regulatory assistance, and Mizuno Marine will offer commissioning and maintenance services.
A significant development occurred in Tokyo on 6 June 2025, with the establishment of a strategic partnership between JPNH₂YDRO, BeHydro, DAIHATSU INFINEARTH, and Mizuno Marine. The primary objective of this collaboration is to introduce hydrogen-powered marine engines in Japan, specifically targeting Japanese ports and coastal areas to advance the country's zero-emission shipping objectives. The focus lies on implementing BeHydro's dual fuel and 100% hydrogen engines, which have already been successfully utilized in Europe, and adapting them to meet Japanese standards through local testing and service support.
As part of this initiative, plans are underway to install two V12 dual fuel hydrogen engines on a tugboat being constructed by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, set for completion in July 2025. Furthermore, three inline 6-cylinder 100% hydrogen engines will be integrated into a zero-emission vessel planned by JPNH₂YDRO. The project receives backing from the Nippon Foundation Zero Emission Ships Project to ensure its success.
JPNH₂YDRO will play a crucial role as the general agent in Japan, overseeing the import, testing, and delivery processes. DAIHATSU INFINEARTH will contribute by providing validation and regulatory approval support, while Mizuno Marine is tasked with offering commissioning and maintenance services, highlighting the comprehensive approach of the partnership towards promoting hydrogen-powered engines in the maritime industry.
