RINA Approves Innovative LNG/Hydrogen Bulker Design at Nor-Shipping Event
Key Ideas
- RINA has awarded approval in principle to a new dual-fuel LNG/hydrogen bulker design at Nor-Shipping.
- The design, developed by SDARI and Almi Marine, features a dual-fuel, hydrogen-ready propulsion system with innovative technologies.
- An onboard hydrogen-reforming solution enables hydrogen production during voyages, eliminating the need for cryogenic storage.
- This collaboration showcases a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices with the integration of hydrogen technology.
RINA, a classification society, has granted approval in principle (AiP) to a groundbreaking dual-fuel LNG/hydrogen bulker design unveiled at Nor-Shipping. The innovative vessel was developed through a collaboration between Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) and Almi Marine Management. This new bulker design, based on SDARI's Green Dolphin 64 platform, incorporates a dual-fuel, hydrogen-ready propulsion system that includes battery-assisted hybrid-electric systems and wind-assisted technologies. One of the key advancements is the integration of an onboard hydrogen-reforming solution, allowing for hydrogen production while at sea. This solution eliminates the necessity for cryogenic hydrogen storage and simplifies supply chains. The announcement at Nor-Shipping highlights the successful outcome of the joint project between RINA, SDARI, and Almi Marine. The approval in principle represents a significant milestone in promoting sustainable practices within the maritime industry, demonstrating a positive step towards utilizing hydrogen as a clean energy source for shipping.
