VIVA Energy has unveiled Australia's first commercial-scale hydrogen refuelling service station in Geelong, marking a significant step towards decarbonisation in hard-to-transition industries and expanding renewable hydrogen transport across the country. The $61.2 million project, four years in the making, features an onsite 2.5-megawatt electrolyser converting energy from wind and solar farms, along with recycled water, into renewable hydrogen. Initially focusing on servicing a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) for partners like Toll Group and Cleanaway, the station will eventually cater to 12 to 15 vehicles daily. The station can refuel 10 trucks or buses within two hours, utilizing renewable hydrogen and offering fast-charging options for commercial electric vehicles. The project received significant support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and both federal and state governments. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles and Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio lauded the project for its emission reduction potential and cost-saving benefits. Viva Energy's strategic move towards cleaner energy solutions includes plans for a nationwide hydrogen refuelling network. The organization aims to deploy 15 hydrogen-powered heavy vehicles within two years, showcasing its commitment to sustainable transportation. Viva Energy's chairman emphasized the importance of investing in the future, hinting at potential developments in renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, and renewable plastic production. The project highlights the significant progress and commitment towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape in Australia.
