Europe's Shift to Hydrogen: A Cost-Effective Solution for Regional Railways
Key Ideas
  • Lhyfe, a green hydrogen producer, advocates for hydrogen trains as a cost-effective alternative to electrification on lightly-used railway lines.
  • The company installed a hydrogen plant in Tübingen, Germany, using renewable energy sources for production, aiming to supply green hydrogen for transport and industrial sectors.
  • Hydrogen refilling stations are now more economically viable compared to electrifying railway lines, making hydrogen trains a promising solution for certain routes.
  • While electrification remains a preference, the shift towards hydrogen is influenced by factors like route length, characteristics, and traffic mix, favoring hydrogen for lightly used regional lines over high-speed trains.
Matthieu Guesné, CEO of Lhyfe, has highlighted the potential of hydrogen trains as a cost-effective alternative to electrification on lightly-used railway lines in Europe. Lhyfe aims to establish itself as a key player in supplying green hydrogen for the transport and industrial sectors, using electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources. The company recently set up a hydrogen plant with a capacity of 30 tonnes per year in Tübingen, Germany, as part of the H2goesRail project aimed at developing a comprehensive production and refueling system for regional trains. This initiative involved using renewable electricity from DB's wind, solar, and hydroelectric portfolio to produce hydrogen for trials on Siemens Mobility's Mireo Plus H trainset. Guesné emphasized the cost advantages of hydrogen refilling stations compared to electrifying railway lines, making hydrogen a more attractive option for certain routes. Although Guesné acknowledges the benefits of electrification, he believes that hydrogen is now a more feasible choice for specific scenarios, depending on factors like route length, characteristics, and traffic mix. He suggests that hydrogen trains are better suited for lightly used regional lines rather than high-speed services, indicating a shift towards utilizing hydrogen as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for regional rail transport.
