Indian Railways is playing a pivotal role in advancing towards a greener and more sustainable future for India. By shifting cargo transportation from road to rail, the railways have saved over 143 million tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting a staggering 121 crore trees. This shift not only benefits the environment but also leads to significant cost savings, with a reduction of ₹3.2 lakh crore in logistics costs over the last decade. With railways being 90% more carbon-efficient than trucks, the transition to rail transport has resulted in cleaner air and reduced diesel consumption, saving ₹2 lakh crore in fuel costs. The electrification of tracks, with 99% of the broad gauge network now electrified, has further propelled India towards a sustainable transport system. Additionally, the implementation of Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) has reduced congestion on roads, lowered diesel consumption, and carbon emissions. Embracing modern technologies, Indian Railways is set to introduce hydrogen-powered trains, showcasing a commitment to zero-emission solutions. With a focus on achieving net zero emissions by 2025 and aligning with Prime Minister Modi's vision for net zero by 2030, Indian Railways is demonstrating the integration of economic growth with ecological responsibility, setting an example for sustainable development.
