Morocco Advances Chbika Green Hydrogen Project Towards Renewable Energy Expansion
Key Ideas
  • Morocco's Ministry of Investment affirms progress on the Chbika green hydrogen project, securing land rights and advancing planning agreements.
  • Government agencies, including MASEN, are collectively driving the project forward, emphasizing the country's commitment to renewable energy.
  • Chbika aims to produce green hydrogen at an industrial scale, generating 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually for European markets.
  • Morocco's national plan targets 20 gigawatts of clean energy, positioning the country as a significant supplier of green energy in Africa and Europe.
Morocco's Ministry of Investment has confirmed significant advancements in the Chbika green hydrogen project during its sixth review meeting, chaired by Deputy Investment Minister Karim Zidane. The project, located near Morocco's Atlantic coast in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, is a key component of the country's green hydrogen program led by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN). Land rights have been secured, and planning agreements are progressing well, demonstrating a strong momentum for the project's development. The initiative, announced during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit in October 2024, involves the construction of one gigawatt of solar and wind energy systems to power a facility producing hydrogen from seawater. This hydrogen will be utilized to produce approximately 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually, with a primary focus on exporting to European nations. The comprehensive project encompasses infrastructure development, including new port facilities and transport systems, to support the export of green hydrogen-based fuel. Morocco's strategic goal is to establish 20 gigawatts of clean energy, enabling the production of up to 8 million tons of green hydrogen-based fuel. Through these efforts, Morocco aspires to emerge as a key player in the supply of clean energy to both the African and European markets.
