Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau expressed optimism about the progress being made in South Africa's Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy during the Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town. He highlighted the development of several commercial-scale green hydrogen projects across the country, each targeting different aspects of the value chain necessary for success. Minister Tau announced the securing of €23 million in grant funding from the German government through the KfW Development Bank, facilitated by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). These funds will support the de-risking and acceleration of key green hydrogen projects, with some Strategic Integrated Projects already completing their pre-feasibility studies. Additionally, the establishment of the Just Energy Transition Green Hydrogen Programme Management Office, under the IDC's guidance, aims to streamline and oversee the implementation of the green hydrogen chapter of the JET-IP Implementation Plan. Minister Tau emphasized the need for collaboration due to the substantial funding required for the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem. Various mechanisms, including funding for project feasibility, de-risking investments, and support for green premiums, will be explored to facilitate ecosystem development and policy support. The ultimate goal of the Green Hydrogen ecosystem is not only to prevent further de-industrialization but also to drive the reindustrialization of South Africa's economy.
