Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg of Sarawak announced at the World Hydrogen Asia 2025 event in Tokyo that Sarawak will establish its own Hydrogen Certification Platform to ensure market integrity. This platform, part of Sarawak's broader strategy to become a regional hydrogen hub, will adhere to international standards to guarantee transparency and traceability in the hydrogen market. The initiative is outlined in the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), aiming to position Sarawak as a competitive, reliable, and scalable hydrogen producer. Sarawak's strategy is supported by its abundant renewable resources such as hydropower, natural gas, and solar energy, enabling a significant reduction in grid carbon emissions. The Premier highlighted the shift towards hydrogen as a clean fuel and emphasized creating hydrogen hubs, accelerating domestic applications, and securing international agreements. Sarawak is already implementing green hydrogen projects, like the Rembus Hydrogen Plant supplying green hydrogen for transportation in Kuching. Abang Johari proposed regional collaboration in certification, infrastructure, technology, and human capital exchange to drive green growth and decarbonization efforts in the Asean region and beyond, emphasizing the importance of harmonized policies and investments for a sustainable hydrogen future.
