JCB, a prominent UK equipment manufacturer, has recently received approval from the European Union to market its hydrogen engines for primary or third-party non-road mobile machinery within the EU and other certified markets. The certification, in compliance with the EU's Regulation 2016/1628, affirms that JCB's hydrogen combustion engine meets the stringent Stage V emissions standards set by the EU. Notably, the hydrogen engine has already been authorized for commercial use in the UK and nine European countries, emphasizing its credibility and environmental compliance. JCB has actively produced 130 evaluation engines for backhoe loaders, loadall telescopic handlers, and generator sets to undergo practical testing, reflecting their commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in the construction industry. Lord Anthony Bamford, Chairman of JCB, expressed optimism about the hydrogen program, highlighting that the EU type-approval signifies a positive outlook for combustion engines fueled by hydrogen in achieving a net zero world. This milestone not only underscores the potential of hydrogen as a zero CO2 fuel but also heralds a shift towards cleaner and more environmentally friendly technologies in the construction sector.
