Japanese shipping major Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Australia’s Provaris Energy have joined forces to advance compressed hydrogen shipping and offshore storage solutions. The 12-month memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two companies will focus on exploring the development, construction, and operation of Provaris' H2Neo carrier and H2Leo barge. Provaris is working on a 27,000 cu m purpose-built compressed hydrogen ship for regional marine transport and a barge system for nearshore and port-side hydrogen storage. K Line will contribute its expertise in technical, commercial, and operational aspects to refine Provaris' newbuild program and operational cost models. This collaboration, supported by commercial advisor Clarksons Norway, is part of Provaris' efforts to address Europe's hydrogen import requirements by 2030. Provaris' managing director expressed the significance of the MoU in developing their regional shipping solution. The partnership also holds the potential for long-term collaboration opportunities and future commercial agreements, indicating a positive outlook for the development of hydrogen shipping solutions.
