The Sultanate of Oman is making strides in its green hydrogen strategy with the launch of its third green hydrogen auction round in Duqm. Orchestrated by Hydrom, this auction aims to solidify Oman's position as a global hub for green hydrogen production and export. The third round offers a 300 square kilometer land block in Duqm for qualified developers, allowing flexibility in project design and a generous nine-month project planning period to ensure comprehensive planning. This initiative builds on the success of previous auction rounds, incorporating lessons learned to optimize competitiveness and bidder participation. The projects in Oman have attracted considerable investment commitments, with over USD 49 billion targeted for a combined production capacity of over 1 million tons per annum of green hydrogen by 2030. These projects, supported by more than 30 GW of renewable energy, highlight Oman's advancement in the global hydrogen ecosystem. Developers in the third round can also explore selling surplus renewable electricity to the national grid, maximizing project value and integration into Oman's energy transition framework. Oman's competitive advantages include access to common-use infrastructure, a stable regulatory framework, and strategic proximity to key demand centers in Europe and Asia. The country's comprehensive efforts extend to developing a dedicated 2,000-kilometer hydrogen pipeline and establishing a liquid hydrogen export corridor to Europe. The auction process has commenced with the release of the RFQ, and qualified bidders are set to submit proposals in early 2026, with awards to follow. By advancing its green hydrogen strategy through auctions and significant investment commitments, Oman is poised to play a pivotal role in the global green hydrogen economy, showcasing its dedication to sustainable energy practices and innovation.
