DP World, an international logistics provider, has successfully tested a hydrogen fuel cell rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane at the Port of Vancouver in collaboration with Tycrop Manufacturing Ltd and Loop Energy. This initiative is part of DP World's commitment to decarbonize its operations, with the aim of electrifying its global fleet of RTG cranes. The company is assessing the feasibility of converting its fleet of 1,500 RTG cranes to hydrogen power. The hydrogen RTG crane, storing compressed gaseous hydrogen, charges a battery that powers the electric drive, offering increased operational efficiency. This milestone marks a significant step towards sustainable logistics, setting a new benchmark in the industry. DP World plans to further test the hydrogen RTG in a one-year field trial to monitor its performance parameters. If successful, the company intends to convert more diesel-powered RTG cranes in Vancouver and Prince Rupert to hydrogen, aligning with its zero-emissions objectives. Additionally, DP World is exploring the use of electric vehicles and terminal tractors as part of its sustainability initiatives.
