A research team from the UC Chile Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering is working on a groundbreaking solution to address the challenges of storing and transporting green hydrogen. Led by Elodie Blanco and Felipe Huerta, the team is exploring the use of activated carbon tanks as a safer and more cost-effective alternative to high-pressure tanks. This carbon material, derived from waste in forestry and agricultural industries, has high porosity, enabling efficient adsorption of large amounts of hydrogen. However, the process of adsorption generates heat, affecting efficiency. To tackle this issue, researchers are designing tanks with extended surfaces to enhance heat dissipation. This innovative approach aims to establish green hydrogen as a viable substitute for fossil fuels, particularly in transportation and residential sectors. Initial results from mathematical modeling and prototype testing are positive, demonstrating the superiority of activated carbon tanks in terms of cost-effectiveness and efficiency compared to conventional storage methods. Chile, with its renewable energy potential, is well-positioned to lead in green hydrogen production. By utilizing electrolysis to generate hydrogen from water using renewable energy sources, the country can contribute significantly to the global transition towards clean energy.
