The Bihar Cabinet has approved the Bihar Renewable Energy Policy–2025, replacing the previous 2017 framework and setting a roadmap for the next five years. This strategic move aims to boost clean energy production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels in the state. Under the new policy, Bihar plans to develop nearly 23,968 megawatts of renewable energy capacity and create 6.1 gigawatt hours of energy storage, covering technologies like solar, wind, biomass, green hydrogen, geothermal, and more. The policy aligns closely with India's national goals of achieving net zero emissions by 2070. Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav lauded Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his leadership in sustainable development, praising the policy as a milestone in Bihar's clean energy journey. The policy offers incentives for private investment, simplifies project setup procedures, promotes grid access, green tariffs, and carbon credit sales. It also introduces flexible rules for rooftop solar installations to encourage wider adoption. Developed by BREDA under the Department of Energy's guidance, the policy incorporates inputs from various departments and industry stakeholders to ensure practicality and forward-looking strategies. Energy Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh highlighted that the policy will help Bihar meet its energy needs sustainably, building a reliable and inclusive energy system. The policy supports innovative approaches like renewable energy zones, hybrid energy parks, and campus-based projects to involve different stakeholders and drive investments and job creation. With this move, Bihar joins other Indian states in embracing renewables as a core part of their development strategy, paving the way for investment, job opportunities, and a cleaner energy future.
