Indian Oil Corporation's Green Hydrogen Plans for Net-Zero Emissions
Key Ideas
  • Indian Oil Corporation aims to develop a nationwide network of green hydrogen fuel stations to achieve net-zero emissions by 2046.
  • The company plans to start by replacing grey hydrogen with green hydrogen at its refineries and then expand to serve mobility demands.
  • The upcoming 10,000-tonne-per-annum plant at Panipat refinery will be crucial in producing green hydrogen at a competitive cost of USD 4.66 per kg.
  • IOCL's strategy aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and includes considerations for both domestic retailing and potential export opportunities.
Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) in India, the largest oil-marketing company, is embarking on a strategic journey towards net-zero emissions by 2046 with a focus on green hydrogen. The Chairman, Arvinder Singh Sahney, announced IOCL's intent to establish green hydrogen fuel dispensing stations across the country. The plan begins with the replacement of grey hydrogen with green hydrogen at IOCL's refineries, with future plans to cater to the increasing mobility demands. A significant milestone in this strategy is the construction of a 10,000-tonne-per-annum green hydrogen plant at the Panipat refinery, expected to be operational by December 2026. This plant is envisioned to be the largest in India and will produce green hydrogen at a cost of USD 4.66 per kg, demonstrating cost-efficiency compared to the government's target of USD five/kg. Currently, India has a limited number of green hydrogen dispensing stations, with IOCL operating two of them. The Chairman emphasized the need to create a supportive ecosystem for green hydrogen-fueled transport to thrive. As part of its plans, IOCL is not only looking at domestic consumption but also exploring export opportunities in alignment with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission. This strategic move by IOCL underscores a commitment to sustainability, green energy, and enhancing fuel infrastructure in India.
