India is making significant strides towards decarbonizing its transport sector by introducing over 1,000 hydrogen-powered trucks and buses by 2030. Abhay Bakre, the Mission Director for the Green Hydrogen Mission, highlighted that almost 50 trucks and buses are expected to be operational this year, with a larger scale-up planned from next year. The deployment of hydrogen vehicles is crucial for reducing transport emissions, especially from medium and heavy commercial vehicles. These vehicles, operating in mid-mile and long-haul segments, find hydrogen fuel as a more viable option due to its energy density and storage advantages over batteries. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023, aims to ramp up green hydrogen production and electrolyser installations significantly by the end of the decade. The initiative is supported by schemes to develop technologies utilizing green hydrogen in buses, trucks, and four-wheelers. Notable Indian automakers are already in the process of developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with pilot projects from oil marketing companies facilitating the deployment of refueling infrastructure. With the introduction of hydrogen ICE-powered trucks and hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses, India is showcasing its commitment to adopting green technology for a more sustainable transport future.
