Coal India Limited (CIL) and AM Green have joined forces to supply 4500 MW of carbon-free energy for green ammonia production in India. Through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on May 7th, the collaboration aims to accelerate India's shift towards a net-zero emissions economy. The project will involve the phased delivery of renewable energy using a mix of solar and wind power. CIL plans to establish solar capacities ranging from 2500 MW to 3000 MW and wind capacities between 1500 MW and 2000 MW in various states, with an estimated investment of approximately Rs. 25,000 crores.
AM Green, a venture supported by the founders of Greenko Group, targets a production of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This capacity is equivalent to about 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, which aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and Europe's green hydrogen import targets for 2030. To ensure a reliable supply of green energy, AM Green plans to integrate CIL's renewable sources with pumped hydro storage systems for round-the-clock power availability.
P M Prasad, Chairman of CIL, reiterated the company's commitment to a sustainable future, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to greener energy sources while acknowledging coal's current role in meeting India's energy demands.
