Jindal Steel Duqm's Sustainable Steel Project in Oman: A Green Hydrogen Revolution
Key Ideas
  • Jindal Steel Duqm in Oman plans to start operations of a 5 MTPA hydrogen-enabled green steel complex by 2028, investing approximately USD 3 billion.
  • The facility aims to be one of the most advanced hydrogen-ready steel plants, with plans to transition from natural gas to green hydrogen by 2033.
  • The steel plant will utilize green hydrogen from renewable energy projects in Duqm for a sustainable and low-emission steel production process.
  • Through strategic partnerships and technology integration, the project aligns with global demands for eco-friendly steel production methods.
Jindal Steel Duqm, a part of Naveen Jindal Group, is set to launch a state-of-the-art hydrogen-enabled green steel complex in Duqm, Oman. The upcoming plant, with a capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), is projected to commence operations by 2028, requiring an investment of around USD 3 billion. This initiative aims to establish one of the world's most sophisticated hydrogen-ready steel facilities, initially operating on natural gas but transitioning to green hydrogen once the supply chain matures. The complex comprises two Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) modules, each producing 2.5 MTPA, with the first unit expected to be operational by December 2028 and the second by 2030, both designed to accommodate hydrogen from the outset. Jindal Steel Duqm plans to introduce hydrogen into the DRI process as soon as a stable supply is available, gradually replacing natural gas with a target of 10-15% hydrogen usage by 2035. The green hydrogen supply is anticipated to be sourced from renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in Duqm, ensuring sustainability and self-reliance for the steel plant. Initially focusing on producing Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) and DRI with low emissions, the facility will cater to the rising demand for eco-friendly raw materials, especially from European steelmakers. By integrating Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology with the DRI route, Jindal Steel Duqm aims for a cleaner and more flexible steel production process. The project, facilitated by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Omani government, signifies a significant step towards sustainable steel production, aligning with global efforts for a greener future.
